PUBLIC SAFTEY
Message from the Chief of Police:
Neighborhood Patrol during Inaugural Activities and other important information.
We look forward to serving visitors of the nation's capital during the inaugural events for President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden. In addition to activating all sworn members of the Metropolitan Police Department to full duty, serving 12-hour shifts, we will deputize and add [4000] officers to the force from 99 law enforcement agencies around the country.
Neighborhood Patrol will not decrease, but, instead, increase during this time due to the longer tours of duty for the officers. Visiting law enforcement officers will serve in the downtown area during the
events. They will not work in the local neighborhoods. Officers from MPD will patrol the neighborhoods. District Commanders will continue to be responsible for activity in the areas they oversee. The director of
the 9-1-1 and 3-1-1 call center has announced that The Office of Unified Communications (also known as 9-1-1 and 3-1-1) will increase their staff of call-takers to prepare for next week's calls for service.Report-writers will also be able to take certain police reports by phone.
Parking and traffic will be enforced by the District's Department of Transportation and the District's Department of Public Works.
I encourage all visitors and residents to sign up for emergency alerts through the District's Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency's Text Alert System. Alert DC. This system is designed to send text messages, even when cell phone signals are low, to your email and cell phone to alert the public of any special announcements regarding inaugural-related transportation, weather and other instructions or updates between Jan. 15th and the 22nd . It is the best way to receive up-to-the-minute updates.
