Transit Updates

Airports

Passengers at Reagan National and Dulles International Airports should be prepared for additional crowds and congestion from Friday, January 17, through Tuesday, January 21, for the 2025 presidential inauguration that is expected to bring an influx of passengers to both Washington, D.C., airports. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend travelers will also contribute to increased passenger loads. Traffic volumes and wait times may be greater than usual during this timeframe. DC Streetcar (Updated January 19)

DC Streetcar will operate on a normal schedule on January 20, with service from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM.

 

Capital Bikeshare (Updated January 18)

Capital Bikeshare offers a convenient and eco-friendly way to navigate Washington, DC, especially during special events like the Presidential Inauguration.

Getting Around During the Inauguration 

Due to heightened security measures and large crowds expected during the inauguration, the downtown areas will have restrictions affecting transportation, including Capital Bikeshare services.

MARC Train

MARC Train is anticipating a significant increase in ridership between January 18 and January 20, 2025 for the Presidential Inauguration and other events in Washington, DC. MARC Train will accommodate as many passengers as possible, however riders should note boarding on trains will be stopped once trains reach a safe capacity. Official Parking for the 2025 Presidential Inauguration

Charter Bus Parking Locations at RFK Stadium and Select Metro Station Parking Lots

USP Parking offers a convenient and secure parking solution for buses attending the 2025 Presidential Inauguration at both RFK Stadium and select Metro station parking lots. USP Parking is providing mandatory motorcoach parking reservations on behalf of the District of Columbia and the 2025 Inauguration Planning Committee.

All charter buses and motorcoaches seeking to bring Inauguration attendees must reserve through USP Parking for assigned parking spaces and receive a parking pass or confirmation number. Specific parking locations, pricing, and logistical information can be found by clicking the Book Now / Reserve Your Spot button and will be shared via each parking pass.

Charter bus passengers should expect to take the Metro to reach the Inauguration. Attendees are strongly encouraged to purchase their metro fare in advance to reduce delays. It is fast and easy by adding SmarTrip to a mobile device, downloading the SmarTrip app, or pre-purchasing a SmarTrip card. For more information, visit https://www.wmata.com/fares/index.cfm.

 

Rideshare & Taxicabs (Updated January 18)

On Monday, January 20, 2025, for-hire vehicle drivers, including taxicabs and rideshare services (Uber and Lyft), should expect heightened security measures, road closures, and restrictions near the U.S. Capitol, National Mall, and other federal landmarks in the District.

Additionally, due to special events, Union Station will be closed to traffic, including taxicabs, rideshare (Uber and Lyft), limousines, buses, and trains beginning at 5 pm. All incoming bus and train service will be suspended at 4 pm.

Pick Up Drop-Off (PUDO) Zones have been designated in alternate areas to ensure that passengers can be transported to their destinations. When traveling via rideshare or taxicabs, note the following designated pick up / drop off locations closest to the Inauguration:

Rideshare Locations (Updated January 18):

  • The Wharf: 9th and Maine Ave. SW (South side)​
  • The Wharf (Additional): 700 Block of 7th St. SW (North side)​
  • Waterfront Metro Station: 1100 4th Street SW (East and West side)​
  • McPherson Square Metro/The White House: 1000 Vermont Ave NW (East and West side)​
  • Union Station: 800 New Jersey Ave NW (East and West side)​
  • RFK: 1800 Constitution Ave NE (South side)​
  • Convention Center: 1400 7th Street NW (East and West side)​

Additionally, to acommodate safe pick-up and drop-off for Capital One Arena events, Emergency No Parking goes into effect beginning January 19 in the following areas:

  • 1200 L Street NW (southside)
  • 1300 L Street NW (southside)

WMATA (Updated January 18)

At a Glance

  • Metrorail hours and service: Metrorail will open at 5 a.m., instead of the previously planned 4 a.m., and will run a normal weekday schedule, instead of increased service. The Yellow Line will not run to Greenbelt as previously planned.
  • Full station closures: Archives, Federal Triangle, Mt. Vernon Square, and Pentagon. Trains will bypass these stations.
  • Station entrance closures: Certain station entrances will be closed during select hours at Judiciary Square, McPherson Square, and Union Station. Stations are accessible through other entrances.
  • Gallery Place transfer only: Gallery Place will be open only to customers transferring lines. No entering or exiting Jan. 19 and 20.
  • Getting to Capital One Arena: Customers should take the Red, Blue, Orange, or Silver line to Metro Center. Exit and make the short walk to Capital One Arena for planned events on Sunday and to the security checkpoint on 9th and G St. NW on Monday.

Service Information

Metrorail

Metrorail will operate from 5 a.m. until midnight on Inauguration Day. Last train times vary by station; please make sure to check the specific station pages

Regular weekday service:

  • Red Line trains arriving every 5-6 minutes
  • Green and Yellow line trains arriving every 6 minutes
  • Blue, Orange, and Silver Line trains arriving every 10-12 minutes

The following stations will close on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. and reopen on Jan. 21 at 5 a.m. Trains will bypass these stations.

  • Archives
  • Federal Triangle
  • Mt. Vernon Square
  • Pentagon (closed Jan. 20 only)

Gallery Place will be open for transfers between the Red, Yellow, and Green lines only. No entering or exiting the station on Jan. 19 and 20. Yellow Line customers traveling north of Mt. Vernon Square should transfer to the Green Line at Gallery Place. Green Line customers heading south towards Huntington should transfer to the Yellow line at Gallery Place or L’Enfant Plaza.

Vermont Ave. & I St. NW entrance closed
14th and I St. NW entrance open 

Judiciary Square
Sunday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. until Monday Jan. 20 at 5 a.m.
F Street/National Building Museum entrance closed
4th and D St. NW entrance open

Union Station
Monday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. until Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 5 a.m.
Amtrak terminal entrance closed
Massachusetts Ave. entrance open and 1st St. NE entrance open

Smithsonian was previously announced as closed but will now be open. Farragut West and Metro Center previously had some station entrance closures, but all entrances will now be open.

Metrobus

On Inauguration Day, buses will operate on a Saturday Supplemental schedule. Check timetables for schedule information.

From Jan. 18-21, detours will be in effect in downtown D.C. due to the security perimeter and road closures. Customers traveling through downtown should allow additional travel time.

The following bus routes will be affected: 3F, 3Y, 7A, 10A, 11Y, 16A, 16C, 16E, 16Y, 22A, 38B, 31, 32, 33, 36, 42, 43, 52, 54, 59, 63, 64, 70, 74, 79, 80, 96, D4, D6, D8, G8, L2, N2, N4, N6, P6, S2, S9, X2, X8, and X9.

On Jan. 20, the Pentagon Transit Center will be closed. Buses will detour to Pentagon City.

MetroAccess

On Inauguration Day, subscription trips will be canceled.

Due to the number of road closures in downtown D.C., customers are advised to plan for delays. Service will not be available to customers in any secure/closed area.

Parking

Parking will cost $3-$5.20 on Inauguration Day depending on the location.
